Designing a multicultural meeting place during the refugee crisis of 2015.
“Around” is a transcultural grill that is designed for a public park in Oslo. It is devided into fivesections: a halal grill, a regulargrill, a kebab-spid section, a frying surface and an upper grill for keeping food warm. The grill is ment as a meeting spot that invites people of different cultures to get together to cook, eat and learn about each other.
This project was a huge learning experience. Throughout the project we collected reserach by methods such as ethnographic fieldwork in asylum centers, and co-operative mapping with refugees. Later we have learned methods to organize and map all relevant information to implement it in our design process.
The most important learning so far, is how to approach and treat
sensitive and vulnerable people in a professional and respectful manner.

Designed by Selvi Olgac, Robin Vinje and Ingvild Kalsnes in 2015.

Prototype in scale 1:3. The round shape invites people into the different cooking sections and hopefully creates an atmosphere that makes people want to hang around. The underbody is designed to by light, elegant and to blend into the palette of nature.
Statements from refugees expressed a longing for meaningful activities and socialising.
Categorising key findings from our mapping session with the refugees.

Creating the prototype was quite a demanding task and we did a lot of different testing to find out if the materials had all the right requirements for the intended use.
